Dragon Kiln at Thow Kwang

On Thursday we took another adventure to see a dragon! We went to Thow Kwang Pottery Jungle and Dragon Kiln. I mwt up with some other expats on the MRT and we rode the train to Boon Lay Station. from there we took a taxi ride to the Dragon Kiln. The Dragon Kiln is huge and is shaped like a dragon's body and tail. This kiln is one of two dragon kilns left on the island and it is in danger of being destroyed. There is a petition to save the kiln now so we will see what the outcome will be. There is a new development called CleanTech that is encroaching on the Thow Kwang Pottery Jungle. It saddens me to see how this "green" company has come in and destroyed the jungle and trees in this area. There are monkeys around and beautiful birds and flowers and other wildlife that are being destroyed by this urban development... "Sigh" Hopefully this area will be saved and preserved.
The kiln is fired once or twice a year and they will be firing in September. We could actually walk inside the kiln because it is so large! There was also a smaller kiln where they had bisque fired some pieces. It was an amazing sight and I hope to go back in September to witness the firing!
There are pottery wheels around the workshop and an area where school children come to take classes. Then there are so many pieces of pottery to choose from. Much of the pottery is made here but there are also many pieces that have been exported. It isn't hard to find so many things that I wanted! I just had to remember that I was taking a taxi and train back home and would have to carry it all! I did manage to bring home a box full of pieces... Pottery can be quite heavy carrying it all over Singapore, but it was well worth it. The pottery here is so reasonably priced too, much better than anywhere else on the island. It was quite an adventure that I hope to see again.
